April was an exhausting month. It was both OT awareness month and Autism awareness month. That's a lot of awareness for 30 days! Oh and don't forget the beginning of the IEP marathon to the end of the year.

This month I decided to utilize my students as advocates for OT and OT month. After a discussion about OT, I went through what each student was working on. I was amazed at how interested the students were to look at their OT charts and read their IEP goals related to OT. It was nice to see that this experience lead to the students being able to communicate who the OT was, what OT stood for, what happened in OT, and why the student was coming to OT. Further, I really felt the handout provided by Progressus was very helpful. I had never used the coach metaphor (referenced in the Progressus handout and available on the website: www.progressustherapy.com/otmonth2010) before but it really helped the students, and myself, explain OT in very simple and relatable terms.

I was also able to attend the AOTA conference, it is always a reenergizing and inspiring experience! Not to mention I get to re-stock my pen supply! Check back next month to find out what new fun things I learned.
