Summer is an excellent time for school-based therapists to learn new techniques, acquire new skills and review best practice. In my school district, I have shorter days during Extended School Year (summer school), giving me a little more breathing room in my schedule. This extra time allows me to read and review materials from courses I have taken in the past. It also enables me to register for a couple professional development courses that I have wanted to take. Here are some tips for finding professional development opportunities:
-Check your national organization’s website.
APTA.org,
AOTA.org and
ASHA.org all have sections devoted to professional development. You can take home-study courses where you receive credit for reading something or listening to something independently. You can also find opportunities for courses near you.
-Check your profession’s Advance website. Advance doesn’t just contain great articles and listings for job opportunities, but it also has education opportunities listed by state.
-Progressus employees can check the Progressus website. There is very valuable information in our Resource Center.
-Check out
speechpathology.com. This is a great resource for all therapists, even PT’s and OT’s. You can sign up for a year for a flat fee of $99, and you can access unlimited CEU’s.
-Check out
skillpath.com. This is a great resource for therapists supervising a PTA, COTA, or SLPA or anyone interested in leadership or management opportunities.
Progressus Therapists, be sure to take advantage of any funds remaining in your Progressus Professional Development Allowance or any of your Professional Development Days that are remaining.
Please comment if you know of any great resources, tools or courses for the summer.
