School systems across the country are calling for special education and related services that are effective and cost efficient. What is one change you would recommend in the way that services are delivered within the school setting that would cause them to be more effective or more cost efficient? Base your response on your experiences, your observations, and recommendations you have read in the professional literature or learned in continuing education programs.

Re: Service Delivery Recommendations

Hello all-
An effective way to provide OT services, as we have done in San Diego Unified, is to schedule services during classroom times/schedules that are appropriate to OT. A group of us work only with middle and high school services and have pioneered ways for OT to be integrated into a student's educational program. This mainly works for the moderate to severe and mild to moderate populations. Our Transition Methods Team in SDUSD feels that this is more meaningful for the student if services are delivered within the context of their curriculum within the natural environment. This service delivery model is not a new idea, but has proven to be an effective method for OT to support our students in their natural environments. This method has also allowed for more opportunities to collaborate with other support staff and service providers. We sometimes plan treatments and prepare materials together.
